As a writer myself, I believe there are three critical components essential to a good story. First and foremost, no matter the time period in which the tale takes place, the issues being explored must be pertinent to the reader. If one holds up the story line as if it were a mirror of today's society, it should reflect exactly what is happening in our world now. Secondly, especially when writing for teens, the significant adults must be portrayed authentically. The reader should not only see the qualities that make an adult in their lives a good role-model, but be privy to the flaws and mistakes that person has made simply because they're human. Exposing these inadequacies help young people deal with their own imperfections realistically and give themselves permission to continue to make decisions without fear of harsh judgment. And lastly, every good story should project some positive outcome. Without being able to see even a tiny flicker of hope, leaves the reader sad and depressed. Jodie Esch's Little White Lies expertly meets the three criteria essential to a good story. Matter of fact, her book exceeds these three components to the point of being a GREAT STORY! Don't take my word for it though, read it for yourself!Product details

Little White PillsBook #2 The Girlfriends Series eBook Jodie Esch Reviews
As a retired school librarian, I can't begin to count the number of YA books I have read. Sometimes after enjoying the first book of a series, I've been let down with the second. But not this time. Jodie Esch has created characters we care about. Yes, there is teenage angst, but friendship is at the heart of this series. I'm really looking forward to the third book.
I thought that this well written book for teens was perfectly presented for the age group. The characters were believable, and young readers would care about the friendship between Rachel Scott and Steph Baxter. Lying to bolster self image is part of growing up, but the serious consequences here of lying to, and becoming involved with, a so called "boyfriend" on the internet provides a cautious warning. It is not done in a heavy handed way, but naturally resolved, in a way teens might take to heart.
Everyone thinks Steph lives a charmed life. But inside her heart and mind, she falls short of the mark and struggles to cope. Beautifully written, this book shines with truth and warmth and the inner-workings of youth. Highly recommended for teens and parents alike. Steph's parents have issues going on in their lives, too. Jodie Esch is a remarkably talented author. Her work is wonderfully layered. Five well-deserved stars! I'll be reading the other books in the series, too!
Can fifteen year old Steph, the perfect teenager, cope with any more pressure? Ninety-six per cent in a test is not good enough for her father. Now her parents are separating. Her jaw aches so much, from grinding her teeth at night, that Steph turns to little white pills for relief. Soon she is using them to take the edge off her days and nights. A move to a private school brings more academic pressure and removes Rachel, her BFF, from her school days. With her life spinning out of control Steph turns to her boyfriend for help. But can she trust him and his best friend, bad guy Hunter? As disaster looms BFF Rachel steps in.
Definitely a good read.
This book by Jodie Esch was a recommendation for a book club I attend. It is very well written, engaging and enlightening. Once I started reading I could not put it down. It is the story of Stephanie, the perfect one, who slips quietly into addiction without meaning to, without realizing what is happening. Her good friend, Rachel, stands by her to the end, helping her crawl out of the hell she has slipped into. There is a powerlessness not only on the part of Steph but also her parents who are smart enough to seek professional help.
I highly recommend this book to any and all who wonder about teenage addiction. There are many signs if one knows what to look for.

I am completely taken off guard by how much I loved this book!
Steph is a 10th grader who is perfect. Only she isn't. Her parents put so much pressure on her that eventually she has no other option but to "turn herself off" by using pills.
Things start to spiral out of control when her drug connection disappears from school before her final order can come through.
Will her friends and family be able to help her or is she doomed to lead a life dependent on the *Little White Pills*.
I loved Steph. I felt like she was a real person. Her struggles are something I think a lot of teenagers will be able to relate too.
Or, if you are like me, you will enjoy it as an adult!
Rachel was another one of my favorite characters and I just realized that there is a whole book on her. I will definitely be reading that one as well.
This book was one of my favorite reads for a long time. What can I say about an author who puts a spell over the reader so it's impossible to put the book down? She either has supernatural powers or is a damn good writer. I won't even ask you to take my word for it; instead I saved you a few lines from the story. The heroine Steph Baxter, a tenth grader is just so darn perfect, she's beginning to hate the word and herself. So much pressure! So many ways to screw up! And so many pills in her mother's cupboard just waiting to make her life easier. At one point Steph is talking about her chubby, best friend Rachel and she says -"Hot dogs are her comfort food. I guess pills are mine." Another line that stuck out for me was - "Secrets are multiplying in my head like germs in a petri dish." Steph is so loveable and yet as you read from her point of view, you can see why she makes the choices she does with drugs, with her boyfriend and with her friends. When a husband and wife make the choice to split their world apart, their victims can be the ones they love the most. I had to give this wonderful story 5 stars and you'll see why for yourself when you read the book.
